Trade with China will grow, with or without free trade agreement
Re: Trudeau can’t hand a trade deal because he is no free trader, by Terrence Corcoran, Dec. 5.

Terrence Corcoran is absolutely right when he says: “The prime minister and his advisers are obsessed with issues that have no relation with the principles of free trade. Labour rules, culture, gender and environmental laws have no place in agreements that aim to open up trade. They are, at heart, attempts to embed social protectionism in agreements that should be focused on free trade in goods and services.”

Trade is about exchanging goods and services for mutual economic benefits and not about promoting freedom of expression and human rights. This is why authoritarian China is the biggest trading partner of democratic U.S., Japan, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand. It is also Canada’s second biggest trading partner. If Canada’s labour, environmental and gender laws are to be incorporated in trading arrangements, no trade agreement with China or any other country is possible.

By talking about non-trade issues, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau might have neglected the real trade issues like tariff and non-tariff barriers. In fact, this is pure distraction which made progress towards trade deal difficult. However, trade with China will grow whether any free trade agreement is concluded or not. Canada needs the goods manufactured in China and China needs Canada’s vast agricultural, forestry, livestock and mineral resources.

China already exports $66 billion worth of goods to Canada, while importing $20 billion worth of goods from Canada, leaving a trade surplus of $46 billion in China’s favour. This is mutually beneficial – Canadian consumers get affordable Chinese goods and China earns foreign exchange to buy more from Canada. This beneficial bilateral trade may be undermined by any managed “free” trade agreement.
